Transport and Infrastructure

We support the UK's transport industry with specialist legal advice in major infrastructure projects, rail operations, docks and harbour operations and road transport.

We advise on the statutory authorisation of infrastructure projects. We have extensive experience and expertise in promoting development consent orders, Transport and Works Act Orders, harbour orders as well as hybrid and private bills. The team has acted  on many major schemes ranging from Government projects such as Crossrail, privately financed energy schemes and rail network enhancements.

We can also advise you on the implementation of the project, on such matters as the procurement process and drafting of commercial contracts. We can also assist in the outsourcing if it becomes practical and desirable to outsource some of the business function, IT or human resources.

Infrastructure projects also require a careful grasp of the relevant health and safety regulations and employee rights, as well as the consequences of what and where you wish to build. Considered use of the planning and environment team before the breaking of ground is advisable, as is the use of our construction team when negotiating construction contracts.

A combination of specialised legal skills are required to bring projects to fruition. They include an understanding of existing legislation in niche areas such as harbours and railways; the ability to draft effective, workable legislation; knowledge of the particular processes and procedures involved; and the ability to deal with the preparation of planning applications and with objections to them.
