Being a company secretary of an academy can be a daunting prospect; whether you are working with a single academy or a multi academy trust, there are numerous governance issues for you to think about. This event is aimed at both new and established academies and will cover the following topics:

  • The role of the Company Secretary in an academy
  • The basics of company law
  • Understanding the role of Directors / Trustees and Members of an academy
  •  Understanding the implications of charity law on academies
  • Legal compliance with a focus on the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014
  • Risk management
  • Managing conflicts of interest
  •  Connected party transactions
  • Undertaking a governance review and re-structuring your governing body
  • Due diligence on governors
  • Best practice and current DFE guidance

This session will include insight and guidance on a number of governance issues that we have dealt with since the Academies Act 2010 was passed and will therefore be useful for those who have attended our previous company secretary seminars.

Who should attend?

  • Company secretaries of existing single academies or multi academy trusts
  • Governors of existing trusts who wish to develop a better understanding of    governance issues
  • Head teachers, business managers or bursars who are involved in governance issues affecting academies
  • Governors or staff at maintained schools that are thinking about converting to Academy status and wish to know more about Academy governance
