Seminar: REITS following the latest legislation

A REIT structure has long been the holy grail for investment in the private rental sector. Following completion of the consultation with HM Treasury in July, new REIT legislation is expected to be released in early December and could commence as early as April next year. This seminar will look at the confirmed and hoped for changes, the pros and cons and focus on the practical opportunities for housing associations, developers, builders and institutional investors in the housing sector.

Seminar: Construction Law Update

After much consultation and debate all construction contracts entered into after 1st October will be subject to a new regime for the adjudication, payment and suspension provisions brought about by the Part 8 of the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009. This seminar will review the legislative and practical changes in construction practice, also examining some new clauses and key amendments being introduced in the JCT design and build contract 2011.

Schools and academies are "contracting authorities" for the purposes of the Procurement Regulations and therefore must comply with the onerous obligations set out in the legislation. The seminar will look at what these obligations are and when the Regulations apply.

Big Society: Big idea? The impact of the Localism Bill on planning

The Localism Bill has now been published. Planning reform is a key component of the Government's "Big Society" initiative. Localism – the idea of decentralising power – is the new agenda. Our conference considers the Bill in the broader context of the Big Society. After an overview by our keynote speaker, CLG Minister Bob Neill, the conference will explore a number of specific issues including the abolition of regional spatial strategies and the introduction of a tax increment financing mechanism. The Bill's impact on major infrastructure projects will be explored along with an analysis of what the IPC has been up to. The conference will conclude with a debate on planning and the Big Society, in which you can share your views with MPs with sharply differing perspectives – a fun and informative way to end the day.

Academies Workshop by Winckworth Sherwood

With the Academies Act 2010 having now received Royal Assent, we expect to see a dramatic increase in the number of maintained schools considering becoming Academies. Schools classed as 'outstanding' following an Ofsted inspection are pre-approved to gain Academy status, but the policy objective is to see all schools converting at some point.

Planning: Post Election Seminar

Prior to the election, the Conservative Party issued their Open Source Planning Green Paper setting out their proposals to re-shape a "broken" planning system. This paper put forward a number of radical reforms which met with mixed viewed. More recently the Government issued its Coalition Programme setting out "sweeping" reforms to create a Big Society. This seminar will explore the policies and bills being put forward by the new partnership government and the impact they will have on planning in the UK.
