CIH calls for continued investment in housing

Tue 15 Dec 2009

The Chartered Institute for Housing (CIH) has urged the government not to cut budgets for social housing expenditure from 2011 onwards.

According to CIH director of policy and practice Richard Capie, the amount of social housing constructed in the UK still fell short of what was needed even during the last few years of high investment.

This is despite the fact that the organisation's recent Housing Review found that more than £8.9 billion was invested in social housing in Britain from 2008-09, the largest sum in 15 years.

Mr Capie described potential budget cuts as bleak given that more and more families are in need of social housing due to an inability to buy their own property.

Earlier this month, housing minister John Healey said that over £40 billion in funding will have been allocated for the government's Decent Homes programme by 2010 in a bid to improve such properties for tenants.
