Boris Johnson to scrutinise planned regeneration project

Thu 24 Dec 2009

The Mayor of London is to exercise his planning powers for only the second time by deciding the outcome of a regeneration scheme in London.

Plans to create thousands of new homes, as well as sport and leisure facilities, in Southall have been met with opposition by the neighbouring boroughs of Ealing and Hillingdon, as it crosses their boundaries.

Boris Johnson will therefore use his planning powers for the first time since he approved the Columbus Tower development in Canary Wharf in October this year.

The Mayor said the proposal clearly meets the test of a planning application of major significance to London, as it will deliver lots of jobs and new homes.

He warned that failure to develop the brownfield site could potentially harm the future economic prosperity of west London.

Mr Johnson added that the region is an "important driver" for the entire London economy.

This comes after the mayor called on authorities across the capital to carry out an audit of potential development sites across the city.

Roger Fitton, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood, commented: "Having a strategic based London Planning Authority is essential to the future of the Capital provided its powers are used judiciously and sparingly which the current Mayor does appear to appreciate."
