Nationwide: House prices have increased 5.9% in 2009
Thu 31 Dec 2009
New statistics from Nationwide Building Society have revealed that house prices have increased by almost six per cent this year.
The figures compare with a 15.9 per cent fall across the market in 2008.
While house prices are still more than 12 per cent lower than their October 2007 peak, they have increased by 8.9 per cent since February 2009.
Martin Gahbauer, Nationwide's chief economist, said that it was difficult to tell how the house prices would perform next year.
His prediction was that the market would remain relatively stable, with no large jumps in either direction.
Despite the effects of the recession, the past decade has been the strongest on record for house price increases.
Since 1999, property values have gone up by around 117 per cent.
Earlier this month, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors revealed that house prices in the UK had risen for four months in a row up to and including November 2009.
