Council house building project gets underway
Mon 04 Jan 2010
Work on what has been described as the biggest council house building programme in almost 20 years has got underway.
New homes are now being built in Tyneside as a part of a £1.5 billion project designed to create more affordable homes across the UK.
It is hoped this will help ease the pressure on waiting lists for council houses, as well as stimulate growth and jobs in the construction sector.
Housing minister John Healey said many more sites across the UK are likely to be up and running over the next few weeks.
He added that he would announce a second round of funding for new council houses before the end of the month.
This coincides with the news that affordability for potential first-time buyers has got better over the last two years, due to reduced mortgage rates and lower house prices.
However, Halifax noted that many are finding it very difficult to take advantage of these market conditions because banks have tightened their lending criteria.
