Council praised for rejecting lap dancing application

A council's decision to reject an application for a new lap dancing venue in Macclesfield has been welcomed by the local Christian community.
Cheshire East Council recently chose not to grant a lap dancing licence to the Repent Nightclub after concerned locals warned that the safety of women in the area could be put at risk.
The Christian Legal Centre said it was "thrilled" to hear the authority's decision, as the proposal would have turned the Mill Street area into a "seedy place".
Dr Louise Brown, policy consultant at the group, stated that this could have had a knock-on effect on the perception of the town as a whole.
Indeed, she claimed that Macclesfield could have developed a reputation of a place where women are degraded if the licence application had been approved.
Councillor Stephen Broadhurst was among those opposed to the application, telling the Macclesfield Express that mixing lap dancing and alcohol in the town could be disastrous.
Robert Botkai, partner at Winckworth Sherwood solicitors, said: "A brave decision by Cheshire East Council and it will be interesting to see if there is an appeal.
"This case demonstrates that a Licensing Committee can be persuaded to refuse such an application so well done the objectors on this occasion."
