NHF: Tory policy puts affordable housing delivery at risk
Wed 24 Feb 2010
The National Housing Federation (NHF) has warned that the Conservative Party's plan to scrap Section 106 agreements could threaten the delivery of affordable housing in Britain.
According to the group, Section 106 currently delivers about 40 per cent of affordable housing in England
As a result, the NHF believes that replacing it with a tariff system would require a "leap of faith" that the delivery of new homes will be maintained.
David Orr, chief executive of the body, said that if the Tories proposed new planning system goes to plan, there should not be a problem.
However, he warned that if it does not work as intended, the country could lose up to 64,000 new affordable homes over the next three years.
The Conservatives plan to revamp the planning system as they believe existing procedures are bad for democracy, the environment and for business.
Shadow communities secretary Caroline Spelman said Tory policies would also give local residents more incentives to back sustainable development.
