London Development Agency unveils regeneration opportunities
Thu 18 Mar 2010
The London Development Agency (LDA) is seeking development partners to regenerate six sites across the east of the city.
According to LDA chief executive Peter Bishop, the organisation is keen to create more high-quality green homes and well-designed open spaces.
It has therefore put six development sites on the market, including land in locations such as West Ham, Newham and Dagenham.
Some of these sites could undergo mixed-use development, with retail outlets, recreational facilities and schools possibly being created.
Mr Bishop said these sites represent opportunities to "press ahead" with the regeneration of east London in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.
He stated that since the eyes of the world will be on the city ahead of the sporting event, the LDA wants partners who "share our vision" for the future of east London.
This comes after the LDA confirmed it is putting £4 million towards the Bankside Urban Forest programme, a regeneration scheme in the Southwark Bankside area.
Roger Fitton, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "We have acted for Barratt on several major regeneration schemes opposite the London Development Agency, all of which are now under construction.
"We find that that the LDA deal very effectively with the balance between protecting the public purse and allowing developers sufficient flexibility to help ensure that the schemes become cash positive as early as reasonably possible."
