Government approves Birmingham tram proposal

The government's backing of a £127.1 million plan to roll out new trams in Birmingham city centre has been welcomed by Centro.
According to the transport authority, which will run the Metro system with Birmingham City and the Black Country councils, this is "good news" for people in the area.
Geoff Inskip, chief executive of Centro, said the new tram system would offer "massive benefits" to both residents and visitors to the West Midlands.
He stated that the transport upgrades would also help to make Birmingham city centre a more attractive, modern and vibrant environment.
The trams would link Snow Hill railway station with a rebuilt and revamped Birmingham New Street station and run through the centre of the city's shopping district.
Official estimates suggest that the planned extension could boost the local economy by about £50 million a year.
This comes shortly after the government announced plans to create a high-speed rail link between Birmingham and London, which would be followed by transport links to northern cities such as Manchester and Sheffield.
