Councils 'not delivering enough affordable housing'

Mon 22 Mar 2010

Councils in England have been urged to step up efforts to deliver more affordable housing.

According to Shelter, 98 per cent of local authorities are not providing enough homes to meet the existing level of demand.

The organisation acknowledged that the economic downturn has created a difficult climate for the housebuilding industry.

However, it said its latest figures "clearly show" that councils must work harder to deliver affordable housing to people who need it most.

Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter, stated that only eight councils have provided enough affordable homes to meet local need.

This, he said, is "unacceptable," as more than one million children live in overcrowded homes and 1.8 million households are on housing waiting lists.

Figures from Shelter also show that in the last year, nine in ten councils provided less than half of the homes that are needed in their communities.

Groups such as the National Housing Federation have already urged the government to make funding for the creation of new homes a priority.
