Lap dancing venue 'aiming to accommodate local church'

Mon 22 Mar 2010

A lap dancing venue has insisted it is doing everything it can to avoid clashing with the activities of a local church.

The Thirst Lodge bar in Oxford was granted permission to run lap dancing nights last year, but campaigners including representatives of St Ebbe's Church have appealed against the decision.

Lap dancing sessions at the bar have already got underway, but the manager has said it is taking steps to respect its neighbours.

Al Thompson told the Oxford Mail that lap dancing is not being staged on a Sunday due to the risk of upsetting the church congregation.

He also confirmed Thirst Lodge is doing "everything in our power" to avoid being noticed by church-goers, hence the lack of outdoor advertising.

According to church spokeswoman Dr Lucy Bannister, there will be a hearing regarding the appeal next month.

David Reid, a curate at St Ebbe's Church, has already argued that lap dancing could lead to a rise in the number of sexual assaults in the immediate area of the venue.

Robert Botkai, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "For information on the law changes relating to lap dancingview our briefings."
