Government to invest in seaside town regeneration
Thu 25 Mar 2010
Millions of pounds are to be spent on regenerating many of the UK's seaside towns, the government has confirmed.
According to the Department for Communities and Local Government, about £5 million will go towards revamping places such as Great Yarmouth, Blackpool and Minehead.
The regeneration strategy will feature improvements to local housing, the restoration of piers and the creation of new jobs.
Communities secretary John Denham stated that this would help to boost the economy of each seaside town and enable them to flourish.
He said coastal areas in the UK are rich with history and a high quality of life that makes them attractive places in which to live.
Mr Denham added that since Labour first came to power in 1997, many of the country's seafronts have already been transformed by government support and investment.
Scarborough was highlighted as one example of a recent success story, as it attracts visitors all year round and boasts strong local leadership and "dynamic" businesses.
Roger Fitton, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "Winckworth Sherwood works with port and harbour authorities as well as developers and is involved in the regeneration of Great Yarmouth.
"Some aspects of the seaside town regeneration schemes do require public investment to be viable."
This comes after the Department for Communities and Local Government confirmed that it will deliver £200 million of savings as part of a government-wide efficiency drive.
