Social housing 'should be a priority at general election'

Thu 08 Apr 2010

Political parties have been urged to put the issue of social housing at the top of their agendas ahead of the general election.

According to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), almost five million people in the UK are currently on social housing waiting lists, while thousands are unable to secure an affordable home.

This, it stated, shows there is a housing crisis in the UK that needs to be addressed.

However, the FMB warned that with housebuilding currently at its lowest level since 1946, signs of any imminent improvement are not apparent.

Richard Diment, director general of the FMB, described the status quo as a "national disgrace" which political parties must pledge to deal with before voters go to the polls on May 6th 2010.

He called on politicians to be more imaginative in thinking about how existing properties can be used to tackle the problem.

Figures from the FMB show there are currently 800,000 empty residential properties in Britain, of which 288,000 have been unoccupied for more than six months.
