Employment law persecutes Christians, says nurse
Wed 07 Apr 2010
A nurse who lost a discrimination claim has stated that employment law in the UK persecutes Christians.
Staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust are not allowed to wear necklaces for safety reasons.
However, Shirley Chaplin fell foul of the dress code when she wore a crucifix to work and was subsequently asked to take it off.
Ms Chaplin refused to do so, claiming that she was entitled to express her religious views in this way.
She was therefore moved to a desk job, which led to her launching a discrimination claim against the trust.
An employment tribunal ruled against Ms Chaplin, who told BBC News the ruling shows the law is not on the side of Christians.
This latest incident has echoes of the case involving British Airways check-in worker Nadia Eweida, who lost her claim of religious discrimination after being told her crucifix breached the employee dress code.
