Mediation recommended for Wembley Stadium construction firms

Thu 08 Apr 2010

Two of the construction firms behind the new Wembley Stadium have been advised to seek mediation or face costly legal proceedings.

Multiplex and contracting firm Mott MacDonald are locked in a dispute regarding who led to the construction work at the London site falling behind schedule.

The former company is claiming £235 million from the building contractor because of the overruns, but no agreement between the two parties has yet been reached.

Justice Coulson has warned that if the dispute is not resolved, legal costs could come to more than £74 million, reports New Civil Engineer.

He said this would be more than in any previous construction dispute he has been involved with in the past.

Mr Coulson added that he is unable to see how costs of this scale could be described as "reasonable or proportionate".

The new Wembley Stadium had originally been scheduled to be open for the FA Cup Final in 2006, but this deadline was not reached.

As a result, the stadium did not host an FA Cup final until the following year.
