Academy Conversion - LA costs and funding challenges

Since the election, there has been very little information about academy grants beyond the usual conversion grants. We await details of any new round of growth funding and any clarity as to what support will be provided to sponsors looking to take on schools with significant deficits.

What we can share with you now is that more and more local authorities are adopting formal policies for charging schools looking to convert and it seems so far irrespective of whether those schools are being directed to do so or not.

Typical costs being sought are around £5k - £7k but some authorities have indicated fees as high as £12k and some have even been unprepared to put a cap on costs. The DfE has so far not challenged the practice but may do so if financial support is provided in other ways. What remains clear is that schools looking to convert need to budget carefully for costs.
