Universities 'attracting more state-educated pupils'

Thu 15 Apr 2010

News that universities are attracting more students who have been educated at state schools has been welcomed by a thinktank.

Figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency revealed that a growing number of university students have either not had private schooling or come from low participation areas.

According to sector commentator million+, the statistics show a "clear link" between the expansion of funded places and participation in higher education.

Professor Les Ebson, chairman of the thinktank, said modern universities have played a "critical role in delivering the social mobility" that has taken place throughout this expansion.

The University and College Union (UCU) also welcomed the increase in the number of state-educated students.

However, it noted that current uncertainties in the job market could lead to more and more people wanting to go to university over the next few years.

The UCU said this "exposes the folly" of imposing widespread cuts on the higher education sector.
