Denham criticises Cameron for shared housing comments

Fri 16 Apr 2010

Communities and local government secretary John Denham has earned criticism from the National Landlords Association (NLA) after accusing Conservative leader David Cameron of acting on the industry body's behalf.

Mr Denham claimed that Mr Cameron's efforts to oppose rushed changes to planning permission rules on shared housing schemes are not inspired by concern for residents, but are a misuse of governmental procedures on behalf of the NLA.

But David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, argues that the comments smack of electioneering.

He adds that the changes to shared housing permissions were rushed through, without the opportunity for MPs to debate them in parliament.

Meanwhile, as the new rules are not due to be imposed on a retrospective basis, the NLA contends that they will not ease any of the existing problems caused by shared housing.

The organisation had previously welcomed Mr Cameron's intervention, welcoming the fact that he had placed housing at the core of the issues involved in the run-up to the impending general election.
