BURA slams political parties over regeneration

Wed 21 Apr 2010

The British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA) has urged the major political parties to place a greater focus on regeneration.

According to the group, the issue of improving deprived and run-down areas has been coherently addressed in previous election manifestos.

However, BURA does not believe this is the case in the run-up to the May 6th election.

Indeed, it said the manifestos for 2010 from all the main parties do not contain anything that "remotely resembles" previous pledges.

BURA said this could reflect ongoing economic problems, as the country may not be able to afford to redevelop many areas.

The group said it is not hopeful that the impact of the credit crunch on regeneration will be "limited or containable", particularly in light of recent analysis and research.

As a result, it believes public funding could play a "critical role" in regenerating different parts of the country, as the potential for growth stimulated by the private sector is declining.

Roger Fitton, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "The potential for continued regeneration led by the private sector would be great if mortgage lending eased."
