Labour aims to make social housing greener

Mon 26 Apr 2010

Labour has outlined plans to make the UK's social housing stock more eco-friendly if it wins the upcoming general election.

According to its new housing manifesto, the party will aim to make all social housing greener, warmer and cheaper to run over the next decade.

Labour said this forms part of its plans to make all homes in Britain more energy-efficient, as more than a quarter of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions come from domestic properties.

The manifesto stated that the party will aim to make sure that all social housing is fitted with loft and wall insulation by 2015 where practical.

Labour also confirmed that work on the UK's first four eco-towns will commence this year, which means there should be 10,000 eco-homes built on site by 2016.

Prime minister Gordon Brown said the new manifesto sets out how Labour will "literally" lay the foundations for the future.

He added that the government will keep supporting the house building industry by bringing forward investment in affordable homes.
