Social housing funding 'must be maintained'

A social housing provider has urged the winner of the upcoming general election to maintain investment in the creation of new affordable homes.
Colchester-based group Colne Housing Society stated that it is becoming "harder and harder" for people to secure an affordable property.
Indeed, figures from the group show that 4.5 million people are now on housing waiting lists, while 500,000 people are living in overcrowded conditions.
Colne Housing Society said factors such as rising unemployment are exacerbating the situation, which it described as "untenable".
Chief executive Mark Powell Davies has therefore called on the major political parties to maintain funding for social housing after the general election.
He said this is "essential" because more affordable homes across the UK are "desperately" needed.
Colne Housing Society added that if the social housing budget is not protected, up to 560,000 planned affordable homes may be put at risk over the next ten years.
This backs up similar calls from the National Housing Federation, which said the housing crisis in Britain could get worse if the housing budget is cut after the election.
