Teachers urged to scrap Sats boycott

Tue 04 May 2010

The government has made a further effort to persuade teachers not to boycott this year's Sats exams.

Schools secretary Ed Balls said the results of tests for 11-year-olds are used by Ofsted inspectors when making assessments of schools.

As a result, he believes Ofsted inspections will "inevitably" be affected if the boycott goes ahead as planned on May 10th 2010.

However, the National Union of Teachers and the National Association of Head Teachers have both insisted that the boycott does not constitute strike action.

Schools will be open as usual and children will attend regular lessons instead of sitting the exams.

The two unions are taking the action because they believe the existing Sats system disrupts the learning process for pupils in Year 6.

Both groups also argue that the exam results are used to put together "meaningless" league tables that help to demean and humiliate pupils and teachers.
