Coalition government concerns for social housing
Tue 11 May 2010
Housing chiefs have stated their concerns over the conflicts of interests that may be experienced with a coalition government.
Mike Creamer, chief executive of Contour Housing Group, said that if a union between the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats gains power, it could result in things going "horribly wrong" in the sector.
He explained to Inside Housing that while the Lib Dems were campaigning for bringing empty properties back up to standard to get them back on the market, the Tory manifesto outlined plans for giving tenants equity in their homes.
However, Mr Creamer did acknowledge that while the two parties were inexperienced at ruling in the present time, it could also mean that the situation could work out right.
In addition, Gareth Swarbrick, chief executive of Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, stated that resolving the issue is vital to enable housing bodies and tenants to plan for the possible changes.
Similar concerns on the effect of the election on the property market were also recently expressed by Jones Lang LaSalle, which fears a decline in property sales and prices.
