Russell Group calls for higher tuition fees

Students should be charged more to go to university, the Russell Group has stated in a report issued to Lord Browne.
The report calls for the standard annual fee of £3,225 a year to be scrapped in favour of a system where universities can charge different amounts depending on the course, a point which has been outlined for consideration by an independent review into student finance, headed by the former head of BP.
It is estimated that this could lead to some subjects costing £9,000 a year, with the National Union of Students stating that this could result in some students leaving higher education with "mortgage-style debts of more than £40,000".
A call for real rates of interest to be placed on loans and that students should begin repayments at a lower rate of earnings than the current £15,000 threshold has also recently been promoted by the Russell Group, which represents 20 of the UK's most sought-after institutions.
