Coalition government aims to boost energy efficiency

Tue 25 May 2010

Plans to improve the energy efficiency of UK homes and businesses have been outlined in this week's Queen's Speech.

The coalition government is aiming to deliver a national programme of energy efficiency measures to both residential and commercial properties in Britain.

According to the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives, this would allow everyone in the UK to access energy efficiency measures that would help them reduce their carbon footprint and utility bills.

Legislation would also encourage greater promotion of low carbon energy production, possibly leading to the regulation of emissions from coal-fired power stations, along with reforms to energy markets to ensure fair competition and greater energy security.

The government added that a Green Investment Bank may also be created to support investment in low carbon projects that may boost the UK economy.

Nicola Raistrick, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "On the basis that two out of three homes that we will be living in by 2050 have already been built, access to energy efficiency measures for homeowners is a key and obvious place for the government to take action on climate change."

This coincides with a survey commissioned by EDF Energy, which showed that voters of all three major political parties favour the inclusion of nuclear power in a balanced energy mix in Britain.
