CIH: Government's commitment to social housing is encouraging

Wed 26 May 2010

The Chartered Institute of Housing has welcomed the government's commitment to supporting investment in social housing.

This week, the Treasury insisted it would aim to protect social housing after it said it would implement £6.2 billion of public spending cuts over the next year.

Sarah Webb, chief executive of the organisation, described its pledge to safeguard social housing as "encouraging," as accommodation of this kind is "much needed" across the UK.

However, she described the Liberal Democrat-Conservative coalition's overall housing policy as a "mixed bag".

For instance, she noted that while there are cuts from housing pledge initiatives, this money has been reallocated into new affordable housing.

Ms Webb said the government's announcement shows that funding for housing is now under close scrutiny in these "difficult times".

She added that the upcoming emergency Budget and spending review will be "key" in providing details about how the government plans to reduce the budget deficit over the next few years.

Chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne will give an emergency Budget on June 22nd.
