Metrolink expansion will go ahead, says MP

An MP has insisted that plans to expand Manchester's tram network will be implemented, despite the government's cuts in public spending.
John Leech, the Liberal Democrat MP for Manchester Withington, said all spending decisions made this year are under review.
However, he told the Manchester Evening News that an expansion of the Metrolink network is not being reconsidered because of the date it was signed off.
Mr Leech said this means that while not all planned infrastructure projects are secure, the Metrolink is "completely safe".
He added that he has been assured by Norman Baker, the parliamentary undersecretary for the Department for Transport, that the expansion will go ahead as planned.
Earlier this week, the government outlined £6.2 billion worth of savings it will make over the next year.
However, it is focusing its efforts on cutting waste in government spending in order to reduce the impact on frontline services.
