BBPA urges authorities to work with pub industry during World Cup

Wed 02 Jun 2010

A body representing the owners of licensed premises in the UK has urged local authorities not to excessively regulate pubs during the upcoming World Cup.

According to the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), the government, police and councils should view the pub as the "best and safest" place in which to enjoy the sporting event.

Indeed, it noted that licensed premises have lots of experience in providing a safe environment for football fans during matches.

The body has therefore called on local authorities and the police to take a positive approach to the World Cup and avoid inventing "unnecessary rules and regulations".

Mark Hastings, director of communications at the BBPA, told the Morning Advertiser that councils and law enforcers should work with pubs and use their expertise to help ensure the World Cup is a success at home.

He was speaking after the Morning Advertiser saw a Home Office document which called on police to step up risk assessments, test purchase operations and visits to pubs ahead of and during the World Cup, which commences on June 11th.

Robert Botkai, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "All businesses intending to show World Cup matches should ensure they have the appropriate licences in place.

"It should not be a case of the authorities inventing 'unnecessary rules and regulations' and pubs should always be on their guard for test purchases."ADNFCR-2761-ID-19812437-ADNFCR
