Oxford City Council to be tough on lap dancing clubs

Wed 09 Jun 2010

Oxford City Council has confirmed it will adopt a tough stance on lap dancing clubs following the recent changes in licensing laws.

Under the new legislation, lap dancing venues will be classified as sex establishments, which means they will have to reapply for their licence in order to stage the activity.

Meanwhile, those who are opposed to a lap dancing licence application will be able to object on the grounds of it being inappropriate to the area.

According to Bob Price, leader of Oxford City Council, the new legislation should allow the authority to manage both the number and location of venues with a sex entertainment licence.

Speaking to the Oxford Mail, he said he is opposed to lap dancing clubs being opened anywhere in the region, as he believes they are dubious and exploitative.

Mr Price added that he does not want to see a "mini Soho" being created in the city.

The changes to the law, which were unveiled by the previous Labour government in February this year, came into force on April 6th.

Robert Botkai, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "We very much hope that Councillor Price does not sit on a Committee that hears an application for a lap dancing licence given that he has aired his opinions in such a forthright manner!"

"If you wish to object to a lap dancing licence or if you are a club owner and wish to apply, you should be consulting an experienced licensing solicitor. Contact me for a free telephone initial assessment of your case."ADNFCR-2761-ID-19827747-ADNFCR
