Social housing 'should be a priority in Budget'
Thu 10 Jun 2010
The Mayor of London has joined forces with three housing bodies to stress the need to prioritise social housing in the upcoming Budget.
Chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne will give an emergency Budget later this month, in which he will outline how the government intends to allocate money during the public spending squeeze.
Boris Johnson has said he believes it is crucial to make the delivery of high-quality and good-value social housing a priority.
He said this would help to reduce the number of people in temporary accommodation and tackle the ongoing affordability crisis in Britain.
Mr Johnson made the calls in a joint letter to the Times with David Orr of the National Housing Federation, Campbell Robb of Shelter and the Chartered Institute of Housing's chief executive Sarah Webb.
The letter coincided with an announcement from the Mayor that 26,014 affordable homes have been delivered in London over the last two years.
This means Mr Johnson is more than halfway towards meeting his target for 2012.
