Transport schemes not under contract are suspended

Plans to carry out transport infrastructure improvements across the UK could be under threat as a result of the government's efforts to curb public spending.
According to transport secretary Philip Hammond, every transport project that is not under contract has been put on hold pending the outcome of the public spending review.
Mr Hammond said the action is being taken to ensure that no public money is spent unnecessarily.
He stated that if the government is to succeed in tackling the UK's record budget deficit, then "not a single penny" should be wasted.
Mr Hammond said he also wants to ensure that the country gets "maximum value for money" for every project.
West Yorkshire Metro, one of the bodies that will be affected, described this as a "frustrating" development, as the planned NGT trolleybus network was expected to boost the local economy and create thousands of new jobs in the area.
