Pubs reminded to have DPS in place
Wed 16 Jun 2010
Pubs in north London have been reminded to have a designated premises supervisor (DPS) in place after one establishment was censured for not having one.
Licensed premises are required to have a DPS so that the selling of alcohol can be managed by a fully trained and experienced professional.
However, the Moon and Sixpence in Harrow went for four weeks without a DPS because of what it described as an administrative error.
Owner J D Wetherspoon was therefore fined more than £3,000 after pleading guilty to breaching licensing laws.
Councillor Phillip O'Dell of Harrow Council said it is "essential" that licensed premises are run by people with the necessary training and experience.
This, he stated, would help pubs fulfil their duty of care to their customers and to the local community.
Robert Botkai, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "Yes the good old DPS.
"Make sure your premises has a DPS in place.
"The DPS does not need to be present at the premises but the police do prefer that the DPS is the person running the business on a day to day basis.
"Winckworth Sherwood clients benefit from our extranet which enables them to instruct us 24/7 so as to ensure that all premises have DPS cover at all times.
"Please do contact me for a demonstration of this service."
J D Wetherspoon is one of the UK's leading pub chains and currently has about 780 outlets across the UK.
