NHF: Housing budget could fall by a third by 2014
Tue 22 Jun 2010
The housing budget in England could go down by almost a third over the next four financial years, new estimates suggest.
According to the National Housing Federation (NHF), the amount of money going into the sector is likely to fall by up to 32.6 per cent during this period.
This, it stated, is because areas of public spending such as overseas aid and health are being ring-fenced, whereas the housing budget is not.
The organisation also warned that government spending cuts could lead to an extra 350,000 people going onto housing waiting lists.
David Orr, chief executive of the NHF, has therefore urged the government not to drastically cut the housing budget, as this could "imperil the fragile recovery".
He added that such a move would also lead to more than 200,000 jobs either being lost or not created.
This comes after the NHF warned that the number of social homes being built in England could fall by 65 per cent this year.
