Many low-income households 'cannot afford the cheapest housing'

Wed 14 Jul 2010

Nearly 900,000 low-income households cannot afford the cheapest housing in Britain, a new report has stated.

According to a study by Shelter, households who access low-cost home ownership have an average income of between GBP 28,000 and GBP 32,000 a year.

However, the charity noted that many households in Britain earn an average of about GBP 16,000 a year, while the national average wage is GBP 21,700.

Shelter believes this disparity means that at least 866,000 low-income households cannot afford to purchase what has been billed as affordable housing.

The government has therefore been urged to raise standards in private rented homes for excluded households and to deliver more social rented housing.

Shelter said that in the current economic climate, every penny of the money invested in public housing schemes must benefit those who need it the most.

According to the latest government figures, average house prices in the UK stood at GBP 209,505 during May 2010.
