East Midlands business leaders lobby government on high-speed rail network

The government has been urged to consider including the East Midlands in the planned high-speed rail network.
A service between Birmingham and London is already being planned, although two options regarding the second phase of the project are currently under consideration.
This would involve either a single line being created between Birmingham and Manchester, or having the network branch out in a Y-shape from the West Midlands.
If the second option is favoured, the East Midlands could form part of the high-speed rail system.
Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce believes this could boost the region's economy by £3.8 billion, much of which would be generated by the reduction in the amount of time it takes to travel to London.
The organisation added that including the East Midlands in the high-speed rail plans would help drive job creation and encourage inward investment.
Plans to upgrade the UK's railway infrastructure were unveiled by the Labour government in March 2010, but the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition has said it will see the idea through.
