London 'a good example of city regeneration'

Mon 02 Aug 2010

The International Olympic Committee has named London as a good example of how a city can be regenerated.

Jacques Rogge, president of the organisation, stated that the preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games are helping to restore a previously polluted and derelict part of the region.

Speaking to AFP, he said east London will be equipped with new access roads, buildings and social housing as a result of the regeneration.

This, he continued, will be one of the positive legacies left behind by the Olympic Games.

Indeed, Mr Rogge said the IOC insists that the sporting event leaves an economic, urban and human legacy in the host cities.

Roger Fitton, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "It's pleasing to see the IOC recognise the regeneration of Stratford East London.

"Winckworth Sherwood have been involved in advising contractors and professionals in relation to the Olympics and advised on the statutory processes and consents necessary to construct the channel tunnel rail link that runs through Stratford."

The Olympic Delivery Authority recently reported that all the sporting facilities for the Games are on track to be completed by next year.

According to the body, "good progress" on the construction work is being made, while the ten milestones outlined last summer have all been achieved on time.
