Sheffield bids for place on high-speed rail line

Thu 12 Aug 2010

Authorities in Sheffield have stressed the need for the city to be included on the proposed high-speed rail network.

Paul Firth, chief executive of Creative Sheffield, told the Star that the region has a thriving tourism industry and business community.

However, he stated that Sheffield - the fourth largest city in Britain - will find it difficult to develop these sectors further if it is bypassed by the rail link.

Nick Tovey, president of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, expressed similar views, saying that not including a stop in Sheffield would be a "serious setback" for the South Yorkshire economy.

They were speaking after transport secretary Philip Hammond told the Transport Select Committee that the number of stops on the high-speed rail network should be kept at a premium.

He said having trains slow down, stop and then gather momentum again on a regular basis would erode the business case for introducing the service.

This comes shortly after Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce expressed a desire for the East Midlands to be included on the high-speed rail network.
