Public offered say on public spending

Thu 19 Aug 2010

Members of the public are being invited to vote for their favourite proposals on how to reduce public spending.

The coalition government recently asked people in the UK to submit ideas on how to make spending more efficient and more than 44,000 suggestions were received.

Those considered to be the best have now been put forward for a public vote on the Treasury website.

People will have until August 31st to consider the different ideas, before the most popular are looked at closely as part of the Spending Review.

This comes after chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne described the Spending Review as a "genuinely collective effort", both in terms of its cabinet contributions and those from the British public.

He added that the coalition government will take decisions that could have long-term consequences for the budgets of government departments and public services.

However, the chancellor stated that these decisions would lead to power being decentralised, people being empowered and a pro-growth agenda being promoted.

Joanna Bussell, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, commented: "The spending review is not about reducing public spending but rather refocusing public spending.

"Everyone recognises that there are finite public resources. This is therefore a real opportunity to ensure public funding is spent on the right things in the right places.

"This is a real opportunity for local communities to influence how public funding is spent in their area and is at the heart of the coalition government's Big Society agenda.

"WS are market leaders in advising local authorities on alternative options for delivering public sector services. WS are currently advising a number of local authorities on outsourcing services to social enterprises working at the heart of the local community."
