South-west England 'needs more social housing'

Tue 07 Sep 2010

More social housing is urgently required in south-west England, Sky News has claimed.

The media outlet carried out an investigation to gauge the state of the housing market across the UK.

Sky News said that while south-west England has an "idyllic" image, it has "real problems" when it comes to the provision of affordable homes.

For instance, it stated that this is the only part of the country where incomes are lower than the national average and house prices are above the norm.

The news provider also stated that about one in 14 households in the region are now on a waiting list for social housing.

Sky News added that spending cuts in the region could precipitate a housing crisis in south-west England and lead to the creation of affordable homes being delayed further.

This comes after the National Housing Federation stated that 1.75 million households were on housing waiting lists in Britain last year - up from 1.04 million a decade earlier.
