Government 'mindful' of high-speed rail disruption

Fri 10 Sep 2010

The government has insisted it is considering the needs of those who will be negatively affected by the planned high-speed rail service.

According to the Department for Transport, the coalition is "mindful" of the impacts the proposed network will have on both people and property.

Indeed, a spokesman told BBC News there is scope for reviewing and refining the alignment of the service to "reduce negative effects on the local environment and communities".

He was speaking after Jeremy Wright, the MP for Kenilworth and Southam, confirmed that part of the proposed route in Warwickshire has been altered in response to concerns from the public.

Mr Wright described this as a positive step forwards, but added he is conscious that by moving the line from one area, it has to go closer to another.

However, he said that the new route would place the line closer to an industrial rather than residential area.

This follows the launch of the Exceptional Hardship Scheme in July, which aims to compensate those who believe they will be severely affected by the infrastructure upgrades.
