Somerset pub ordered to close while licence is reviewed

Wed 25 Nov 2009

South Somerset District Council has ordered a pub to remain shut while its licence is reviewed.

The council's licensing panel took the decision to order the temporary closure of the Kings Arms in Crewkerne after police officers reported details of an incident outside the pub on November 15th 2009 which left a man with serious injuries.

At an emergency meeting on November 20th 2009, councillors chose to close the pub in the interests of public safety.

The Kings Arms will remain closed while a formal review of its licence takes place.

South Somerset District Council had not previously used the powers contained in the Licensing Act to order the immediate closure of a business, but councillor Ric Pallister said the circumstances meant it felt compelled to act to protect the public.

Mr Pallister, who is the council's licensing portfolio holder, said a thorough review of the pub's licence would now take place before the panel decided what further measures need to be taken.ADNFCR-2761-ID-19477673-ADNFCR
