Shapps welcomes salary freezes at housing associations
Mon 19 Sep 2011
Housing minister Grant Shapps has hailed the pay freezes taken by a number of chief executives at various housing associations in the UK.
He stated that he is "encouraged" by the results of a recent report from Inside Housing, which indicated that the majority of senior officials at the organisations have frozen their salaries.
Shapps hailed the efforts of chief executives in particular, some of whom have taken pay cuts of up to 14 per cent.
The report's findings also showed that 15 bosses saw their salaries fall and 55 of the largest 100 associations have had a complete remuneration packages freeze.
However, Shapps called upon the heads of organisations who have enjoyed rising total salaries to "think again" and consider whether they can justify earning more money than the prime minister.
Last month, Mr Shapps announced government plans that will grant councils more financial freedom to purchase and build new housing in their regions.
