House of Commons passes Equality Bill

Fri 04 Dec 2009

The House of Commons has approved the completion of the Equality Bill.

Among other measures, it will require employers to report on the remuneration being paid to men and women in a bid to end the practice of men being paid more than women in the same or similar jobs.

Enhanced requirements to protect disabled people from discrimination have also been put in place, while it is hoped that the Bill will take further steps towards prohibiting age discrimination.

The minister for women and equality, Harriet Harman, said she is pleased that the Equality Bill has been passed and said she hopes it will create a more fair society in the UK.

This follows research from the Government Equality Office which showed that many women are being overlooked for board-level positions within organisations, despite having relevant qualifications and experience.

It was found that this discrimination was also deterring female members of staff from applying for top jobs.

Whether legislation will have any impact or make any difference remains to be seen.
