London mayor calls for regeneration ideas
Mon 31 Oct 2011
Mayor of London Boris Johnson is now calling on the public to make their views known regarding his regeneration plans for east London, following the Olympics in 2012.
There is now under one month before the consultation on the matter closes, with Mr Johnson estimating that the legacy of the Games could deliver thousands of new jobs, new communities and up to 30,000 additional homes in the area.
Mr Johnson explained that he wishes to work closely with host boroughs, the private sector, landowners, the Olympic Park Legacy Company and existing communities to help deliver his vision for this part of the city.
He went on to say that this new part of London needs to "reflect its energy, its diversity and its noise. It should be built to inspire".
Roger Fitton, a partner at Winckworth Sherwood, commented: "The continued regeneration of east London should have an important impact on both London's and the UK's economy provided the legal structures put in place are sufficiently flexible to cater for peaks and troughs in activity and nimble enough to allow exits where there may be failure to deliver."
The Games themselves have proven to be extremely popular among sports fans, with the London 2012 Organising Committee recently confirming that more than 100,000 people have applied for over one million tickets for the Paralympic Games.
