Government to assess efforts to improve social housing

Wed 09 Dec 2009

The government is to launch a large-scale assessment of the quality of social housing in the UK in a bid to ensure that all tenants are living in clean, well-kept homes.

John Healey, housing minister, said that more than £33 billion has already been invested in the government's Decent Homes programme since 2001 and that over £40 billion will have been allocated in funding by 2010.

This should mean that 92 per cent of social housing properties will be classed as 'decent' by next year.

However, Mr Healey said he wants to make sure that some authorities are not letting tenants down after a study found that 13 councils still have half of their social housing in the 'non-decent' category.

He stated that the government is committed to making sure all publicly-owned homes are fit to live in.

Earlier this month, a report published by Shelter suggested that it will take an average of ten years to clear waiting lists for social housing in England.
