Thousands of council tenants 'face eye-watering rent hikes'

Tue 17 Jan 2012

Many people who live in council houses will see rental costs go up in the near future, a new study has revealed.

According to Inside Housing, tens of thousands are set to be hit with a hike of at least eight per cent in the next financial year.

The publication made the prediction after carrying out a poll of England's 50 biggest social housing providers to find out the extent to which they are planning to raise rental rates in the near future.

Although many plan to use the government formula to set the charges, and others have not yet decided what to do, a high proportion intend to hike costs by the maximum level permitted.

Lots of the biggest stock-owning local authorities are among those planning to raise rental rates by the highest amount allowed, along with the majority of housing associations.

Inside Housing said this means many tenants will soon see rents go up by an "eye-watering" amount.

This comes after the government launched a consultation on proposed changes to the system of allocating homes to social housing tenants.
