A London banker has won an age discrimination ruling against his former employer after he was made redundant in May 2008.
Achim Beck, who is 42 years old, won his case against the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) after the financial institution was unable to demonstrate that its decision to dismiss him was not significantly influenced by his age.
The basis of Mr Beck's case was an internal memo stating that his replacement should fit a younger entrepreneurial profile.
Mr Beck had been employed as head of marketing at CIBC and was earning around £900,000 at the time he left the company.
He is potentially in line for a large compensation payout following the ruling by the London South Employment Tribunal.
The amount he receives will be decided in a later hearing.
Earlier this year, Peter Barker, who is 51 years old, won a similar claim against NATS, the air traffic control service, for its policy of not recruiting anyone above the age of 35, reported the Telegraph.
