Government invests in green buses

A transport operator has welcomed a government grant which should help it to reduce the carbon footprint of its fleet.
The Department for Transport has allocated £1.7 million from its Green Bus Fund to First in Leeds.
This will be used to purchase 22 eco-friendly double decker buses between now and 2012, reports the Yorkshire Evening Post.
Dave Alexander, managing director of First in West Yorkshire, has welcomed the move, describing it as good news for its customers in the Leeds area.
He added that First is leading the way in the bus industry by taking positive steps to help the environment.
Meanwhile, more than £2.1 million has been allocated from the Green Bus Fund to Reading Transport Ltd.
Chief executive James Freeman said he is delighted to receive the government support, which will part-fund up to 20 ADL Enviro 400H hybrid double deckers.
He added that the purchase of the buses would help to emphasise Reading Transport's commitment to helping the planet.
